Youth Take and Make – Fall Trees
Available beginning September 6, and through the month
The leaves will start to turn and our paper Fall Trees will do the same! This simple but delightful tissue paper tree will look great on your refrigerator. Kits will be available from Hackley Library beginning September 6. Free.
Teen Take and Make – Fall Coasters
Available beginning September 6, and through the month
Grab a cool coaster project which includes a coaster tile, mod podge, and a foam brush. The leaves are your choice! Kits will be available from Hackley Library beginning September 6. Free.
Preschool Story Time

Fridays, September 9, 16, 23, & 30 at 10:30am
Intended for ages 0-5, HPL’s in-person Story Time is designed to teach early literacy skills to parents and caregivers while children enjoy a fun, interactive atmosphere. Join us at Hackley Library for stories, songs, and movement activities! Free.
LEGO WeDo 101
In-person at Hackley Library
Tuesday, September 13 from 4:30-5:30pm
This in-person program is a good opportunity to get hands on with robots, coding, and LEGOs! It works best for 2nd grade students and up, and younger children will need adult assistance. LEGO WeDo 101 is open to six families – each family will share a kit. Registration Required. Call 231-722-8014 or visit HPL to register. Free.
Teen Craft – Yarn Mandala

Play Readings from Irish Theater
With Les Rorick and Muskegon Civic Theatre

Experience a night of performance and pedagogy as local theater artist, Les Rorick, shares the history of Irish theater. Additionally, Les will be accompanied by an actor from the Muskegon Civic Theatre to perform scenes and monologues that best exemplify this special genre of art. Registration is preferred. How to Make a Zine!

Whether you are creative or not, you can make zines! Zines are basically booklets, where you can express yourself, embrace your creativity, tell your family history, show your art, talk about what makes you most excited with life, display photography, showcase your poetry, or a myriad of other things!

Tolkien Program with Michael Johnson

Not all who wander are lost! Come learn about the mythical world of Middle Earth and the imagination of best-selling author J.R.R. Tolkien, through a presentation of The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings! This presentation will explore the themes and characters that make Middle Earth the most popular literary fantasy realm of all-time, and get a chance to win a special edition copy of The Hobbit! Left to Write (and Left to Write at Night!)

If you enjoy creative writing, you’ll love Left to Write, HPL’s own creative writing group. Here you can participate in writing exercises, share your own stories, and meet other creative writers. This group provides a low-key atmosphere for writers of all experiences, everyone is welcome! Remember to bring a pen and paper. Free.
West Michigan Voices: Zine Collection
Hackley Library’s West Michigan Voices: Zine Collection is a way for you get to your voice heard! This interactive, community collection aims to be a creative outlet for adults 18 and older living in West Michigan (this includes outside of Muskegon County as well), and also aims to be an amplifier for marginalized voices in our communities.
This special collection will consist of submitted zines from adults, and will be available for patrons to read while in Hackley Library.
What is a zine you ask? Zines are very easy to make, and are often in the form of a simple booklet. They can be as easy as taking regular copy/printer paper, folding it, and stapling or taping it together. The content of a zine can be almost anything! A zine can share your stories, showcase your art, display your photography, show your poetry, share a family history, exhibit your comics, etc. Really anything that the creator wants to say!
Thanks to a grant from the American Rescue Plan, HPL was able to purchase a scanner, which means we will be able to scan each accepted submission and store them digitally in our local history collection, so they can be read anywhere in the world. This means that, even when the physical copy wears out, there will always be a digital copy of their work available. The digital copies will act as a time capsule, reflecting the lives of people in West Michigan – their thoughts, feelings, and creativity.
We are currently in the phase of accepting zine submissions (we will officially launch the collection in October 2022). The more people who choose to submit zines, the more diverse and healthier our collection will be to unveil in October.
