Tech Center students earn 10 first place awards in industrial technology contest; 25 to compete at state level

Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (MACTC) Auto Collision/Refinishing, Computer-Aided Design, and Machining/Engineering Technology students earned ten first-place awards, one Grand Divisional Award, and 25 individuals placed in the top four qualifying them for state competition during the Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society (MITES) Regional Competition May 4–5, 2017. The regional competition was held at Big Rapids High School in Big Rapids, Michigan. The competition compared approximately 380 student projects in various industrial technology categories from high schools and tech centers throughout Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Mason, Manistee, Lake, Mecosta, and Osceola counties. Industry professionals judged projects based on accuracy, craftsmanship, and difficulty.

 

Auto Collision/Refinishing student Brendon Frees (Holton) earned first place in General Auto Body for his street rod entry. Computer Aided Design (CAD) student August Lee (Fruitport) earned two first place awards for Architectural Topographic Map and Architectural Presentation. She won the Grand Divisional Award for Architectural Topographic Map. Classmate Cameron Whitener (Holton) also earned two first place awards. One for Architectural Rendering and another in Pictorial Assembly. Cameron earned second place in Promotional Product Imagery. Collin Hill (Reeths-Puffer) earned first place in 3D Prototype Models-Assembly. Collin also placed third in 3D Prototype Models-Single Part. Kyle Rydzeski (Holton) earned first place in Promotional Product Imagery. Machining/Engineering Technology student Jedidiah O’Brien (Mona Shores) took first place in Single Machine Precision Tool, classmate Michael Gayton (Muskegon Community Ed Center) placed first in Single Machine Hand Tool, and Wesley Delora (Oakridge) earned first place in Mating Moving Parts.

 

Other winners included CAD students Kyle Milliron (Oakridge), second place for Architectural Topographic Map and third place for Architectural Presentation; Dakota Wyant (Holton), second place in Architectural Presentation; Mark Wallace (Mona Shores), second place in Pictorial Assembly; Matt Eden (Mona Shores), third place in Pictorial Assembly; Zack Dohnal (Montague), fourth place in Pictorial Assembly; Jared Fleener (Orchard View), fourth place in Architectural Presentation; Spencer Keene (Reeths-Puffer), fourth place in 3D Prototype Models-Single Part; Jordan Poffinbarger (Ravenna), fifth place in Pictorial Assembly Drawing; Anthony Lock (Oakridge), fifth place in Architectural Presentation; Spencer Trnka (Whitehall), fifth place in 3D Prototype Models-Single Part; and Hayden Assink (Holton), sixth place in Architectural Presentation. Other winners from the Machining/Engineering Technology program included Brandon Rusco (Oakridge), second place Machine Crafts; Oscar Stiver (Ravenna), second place Single Machine Hand Tool; Eliyah Moore (Muskegon Heights), second place Mating Moving Parts; Jaren Stott (Fruitport), third place Mating Moving Parts; and Michael Morey (Ravenna) fourth place Single Machine Hand Tool. All students earning first through fourth place will advance to the state competition.

 

Twenty-five student projects from the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center qualified for state competition being held May10-13 at Saginaw Valley State University. The Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society was established in 1928. It is a professional organization of industrial technology and career and technical education (CTE) educators whose purpose is the development of industrial and technology education at all levels of private and public education.
