Tech Center students advance to state hospitality competition

On February 19, 2016, the Baker College Culinary Institute of Michigan (CIM) hosted 44 hospitality students from seven career tech centers in Northwestern Michigan for the 2016 SkillsUSA Regional Competition. These students competed in four areas: Culinary Arts, Commercial Baking, Food & Beverage Service, and Team Banquet.

Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (MACTC) student Casey Nelson (Orchard View) earned a gold medal, and classmate Ariel Bates (Whitehall) earned silver, in Restaurant Service. The contestants were responsible for demonstrating a formal table setting, performing host/hostess duties, and functioning as a server by relaying specials, up selling, placing and delivering the guest’s order, and calculating the guest check.

Savanna Weglarz (Holton) took a silver medal in Culinary Arts for her knife skills and preparation of a three course meal. The meal included chicken vegetable soup, a composed salad with emulsified vinaigrette, and sautéed breast of chicken with julienne of carrot, rice pilaf, and sautéed mushrooms.

All three medalists have now qualified to compete at the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference in Grand Rapids, April 8-11, 2016. Students competing at the state competition have the opportunity to earn college scholarships for their performance.
