MUSKEGON, MI – The inaugural Muskegon Summer Wine Up festival kicks off in two weeks on Saturday, June 8th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hackley Park in downtown Muskegon. The festival will include live music, food trucks, wine tastings, a “Mystery Wine Contest”, and wine seminars.
The Muskegon Summer Wine Up is being produced and organized by Cumulus Radio – Muskegon, which features radio stations WLCS-FM (Classic Hits); WVIB-FM (Urban Adult Contemporary); Sunny 92.5 WWSN-FM (Adult Contemporary); 97.5 Nash Icon WLAW (Country).
Patrons will get a chance to sample dozens of wines – produced not only in Michigan but also nationally and internationally.
The “Mystery Wine Contest” gives patrons the opportunity to showcase their skills at distinguishing between an expensive wine versus a box wine, for example. Attendees will have to do their best to determine the difference.
“We want people who come out to have fun, so we came up with this game,” said Rich Berry of Cumulus Radio – Muskegon, the organizers of the “Muskegon Summer Wine Up.”
“I think people will be surprised when they make the wrong pick,” Berry laughed. “Today’s wineries are so good at what they do that it can be very hard to determine what is a so-called fine wine and what is a discounted wine – especially when they are side-by-side.”
The “Muskegon Summer Wine Up” takes place from 2 pm to 8 pm on Saturday, June 8th at Hackley Park in downtown Muskegon. Wineries who will be participating include:
• Parducci Cellars
• St. Julian Winery
• Lemon Creek Winery
• Leelanau Winery
• Copa Di Vino
• Jackson Family Wines
• Bronco Family Wines
• Woodbridge & Robert Mondavi Wines
• Babich Wines
• Chateau Grand Traverse Winery
There will be a series of short seminars throughout the day that are designed to educate and entertain wine lovers.
“We’re calling it the ‘Muskegon Summer Wine Up’ although it isn’t officially summer yet. We thought it was a good idea to make this an event that celebrates that summer is coming soon to the Lakeshore,” said Berry. “Muskegon has always had some great festivals and we wanted to continue with that same spirit of fun that has always existed in Muskegon.”
Attendees will have the opportunity to sample over 100 different types of wines, according to Berry. Sample sizes will be 1.5 ounces.
“Whether you are a wine connoisseur or you are a wine novice and want to learn more, this is going to be a fun event,” said Berry. “We want to create a first class wine festival in Muskegon to take advantage of the natural beauty of Hackley Park.”
Admission is $15.00 and includes a souvenir wine glass and four wine sample tickets. Additional samples may be purchased throughout the day. You must be 21 or older to attend. Everyone must present a valid ID to be admitted.
Sponsors of the “Muskegon Summer Wine Up” include the Little River Casino, HarborLight Credit Union, Parties in the Park and the Muskegon Heights Optimist Club.
