Muskegon Lumberjacks rally with three straight goals to stun Dubuque 3-2

DUBUQUE, IA- Morale was low heading into the first-intermission locker room, but the Muskegon Lumberjacks will be in high spirits heading home from Dubuque. The Jacks erased a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 on the last leg of a three-games-in-three-days stretch.

Muskegon was outshot for the third consecutive day, but found a way to tie the game with two second period goals, and got a late game-winner from Will Smith.

In the first period, Dubuque jumped out to an early lead when Taylor Brierley walked in right down the wing and pumped a wrister past Keith Petruzzelli’s glove to make it 1-0.

The Saints followed that up with another score, a shorthanded goal scored by Quinn Preston. Preston’s first-career USHL goal made it 2-0 after one period.

In the second, the Jacks clawed back in it with 5:11 to play in the period. Collin Adams redirected a Garrett Van Wyhe saucer pass into the net to make it 2-1.

Less than three minutes later, rookie Marc Del Gaizo hacked in a loose puck out front, beating Jaxon Castor to tie the game heading into the second break.

In the third, the teams traded chances but couldn’t score, until captain Bo Hanson flung a point shot into Castor’s pads. Will Smith hammered home the rebound with just 1:58 to play, and the Jacks would hang on to win it 3-2.

Muskegon had not overcome a two-goal deficit this season. They improve to 9-5-0 while Dubuque drops to 6-6-1.

Petruzzelli stopped 22 of 24 Saint shots while Castor made 16 saves on 19 chances.

The Jacks next come home for two games played on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders is military night, with military personnel getting in free with ID. Puck drop is at 7:15pm Saturday and 3:05pm Sunday.
