Muskegon County is partnering with other municipalities and organizations to hold recycling and tire collection events spring through fall 2017 for Muskegon County residents.

Muskegon, MI – Over the past 5 years, Muskegon County and the City of Muskegon have been teaming up to host the Muskegon County Recycling Events for Muskegon County residents. Each event is estimated to serve approximately 600 Muskegon County residents to remove problem waste from the waste stream. This service helps to reduce environmental impacts and provide Muskegon County residents a free outlet to dispose/recycle their unwanted and possibly harmful materials.

Muskegon County Department of Public Works (DPW) provides funding and coordination of these events. “Since 2012 we’ve seen over 2,300 residents drop off over 10,000 gallons of hazardous waste, 63,000 lbs. of electronics, 13,000 tires, and 28,000 lbs. of sensitive documents for shredding, all of which were treated and recycled. Residents really appreciate this service,” says Commissioner Susie Hughes, Chair of the Muskegon County Board of Public Works. “Trained volunteers, most of which are county employees, staff the event and do a really fantastic job,” Commissioner Hughes points out.

The 2017 Muskegon County Recycling Events will take place on Saturday, April 22 (Earth Day!) and October 21 from 9am-1pm at 1350 E. Keating Ave. for Muskegon County residents only (NO business waste). The services will include: sensitive document destruction, collection of car and truck tires with or without the rims, collection of electronics (including tube and projection TVs and computer monitors), and household hazardous waste (including vehicle fluids, batteries, CFL light bulbs, florescent tubes, oil-based paints [NO latex paint], fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) collection for treatment and proper recycling. Future events will take place on the 4th Saturday in April and the 3rd Saturday in October. Call Muskegon County Solid Waste at 231-724-6001 or visit www.co.muskegon.mi.us/hhw for details.
