Make your own book!
March may be reading month, but books wouldn’t exist without authors and often, illustrators! We will have two book crafts available with varying difficulty levels. Take them home, make a book and draw the illustrations and write a story. We will put them on display and return them at the end of the month. Free and available through the month while supplies last.

We’re partnering with The Whisker Room Café to help kids practice and strengthen their literacy skills by reading out loud to their friendly foster kitties!

We take suggestions! For our teen stakeholders, we will be making a bead maze in January! Talk to Melissa in Youth Services to request ideas for February – April. No reasonable request denied! We want to hang out, craft, and meet new friends! Free.

We have two four-legged reading helpers in HPL’s Youth Services!! Practice and strengthen literacy skills by reading out loud to our friendly therapy dogs who are calm, non-judgmental listeners. Middle Grade Book Club

Hungry for good stories? Hungry for pizza? Bring your appetite(s) to help us kick off our new book club. No need to read the book ahead of time–we’ll spend time reading the first chapter together while we enjoy pizza and pop. 1,2,3 Play with Me Workshop

Wednesdays in March (March 4, 11, 18, 25) and Wednesday, April 1

Bring your baby or toddler for special one-on-one play and sensory time!
This informal five-week workshop connects you, the caregiver, with a variety of community experts while your little one explores our play space.
Each week, we’ll feature a different sensory experience or craft as well as a different parenting topic.

Community Access Line of the Lakeshore 211 (CALL 211) comes to Hackley Library on Thursdays from 1:00-4:00pm, giving you the opportunity to meet and talk with a community resource specialist!
CALL 211 offers help with connecting individuals to SO many resources, including information on food, housing, employment, mental health, and so much more! Speaking to CALL 211’s resource specialist is free. Check HPL’s Facebook page for any cancellations.
Tech Time with Jim

Bring your own device or use one of our patron computers and receive specialized one-on-one assistance from our Tech Assistant, Jim! Come with your tech questions, such as needing help with using a device, downloading our free Library Apps, or something else.
Help will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is an ongoing, DROP-IN program, happening at Hackley Library on Thursdays from 9am – 11am. Free.

Join us at Hackley Library for a new take on Book Club! We’ll meet on the first Monday of each month. Each month there will be a theme, where you can choose a book based around that theme. At Book Club, you’ll be able to share about the book you read, and discover reads from other attendees! March’s theme is to read a book with a purple cover! Free.

Michigan Anishnaabek in the Civil War

Michigan had the largest, all Indian regiment in the Union Army: Company K.
This group of Anishnaabek fought in pivotal battles that helped shape American history, yet little is known about them.
Presented by Eric Hemenway, this talk will discuss the details of the company and the complexity of their involvement in the war. This program is part of the America 250 Lecture Series with Eric Hemenway.

From Storage to Story: Using Museum Collections for Local History Research

Since 1937, the Lakeshore Museum Center has collected objects and archival material documenting life in Muskegon County.
With over 65,000 objects in the museum’s collection, where does a researcher begin? This presentation will highlight the resources in the museum’s collection, how they can be accessed, and explore how three-dimensional objects can aid in historical research.
Brenda Nemetz has been the Collections Manager & Registrar at the Lakeshore Museum Center since 2017.
She is responsible for the care of three-dimensional objects and oversees all acquisitions and loans to the museum.
