Intended for ages 0-5, our in-person Story Time is designed to teach early literacy skills to parents and caregivers, while children enjoy a fun, interactive atmosphere. We’ll read stories, sing songs, and do movement activities! Please check HPL’s Facebook page for any cancellations. Free.
Lighthouse Story Time
In-Person at Muskegon South Pierhead Lighthouse
Mondays in June & July at 3:00pm
Catch some sun and fresh air with Hackley staff out at the Pere Marquette Lighthouse!
We’ll read stories, sing songs, and watch the boats out on the lake. Free.
Soft mats are provided for seating.
Join us for a special Lighthouse Storytime on Thursday, August 7 at 3 pm to celebrate National Lighthouse Day!
Paws and Read with Breezy and Dolly

Mondays, June 9 & 23 from 4:00 – 5:00pm
Practice and strengthen literacy skills by reading out loud to our friendly therapy dogs. They’re calm, non-judgmental listeners who are excited to hear all the stories — and receive all the belly rubs. Ages 3-12. Free.

Teen Time

We designate this hour every month for crafting, projects, and more for our patrons ages 13 – 18 in our Teen Room on the first floor of the library.

How to Build Your Dragon – LEGO Competition

We’re back with another head-to-head Lego competition this time with DRAGONS!
Form your team of 2-4 builders and prepare to build your Lego set faster than the other teams. This friendly competition is registration only and teams must register ahead of time. Please call 231-722-8014 to register.

Drawing Dragons

Ever wanted to know how to draw a delightful and dangerous dragon? Learn to use basic shapes to create unique imaginative dragons!
No prior drawing experience needed in this follow-along program. Free.

Create your own tea blend to take home during this program with Kaleidoscope Farm, and try samples during the event! Kaleidoscope Farm locally grows chemical free flowers and herbs in Muskegon. These beneficial ingredients are great for use in tea blends and other self-care products. Free.

Bubble Painting at MMA

Wednesday, June 25 at 3:00pm
Bubble paint your world! Toddlers, preschoolers, and young elementary-aged children will enjoy a bubble art craft hosted by the Muskegon Museum of Art.
After they complete their projects, you’ll take a Slow Art Looking Tour.
Staff will talk about three art pieces and then provide a BINGO sheet to complete at the art museum! Free. Ages 2-6.

Left to Write – Creative Writing Group

If you enjoy creative writing, you’ll love Left to Write, HPL’s very own creative writing group! Here you can participate in writing exercises, share your own stories, and meet other creative writers (of all experiences, new or seasoned!).
This group provides a low-key atmosphere for writers of all experiences, and everyone is welcome! Remember to bring paper and your favorite pen.

Speaker Kate Penney Howard will share during this lecture event. Imagine this – Near the top of your match list, you’ve got this mystery match that just might be the key to your research. The only problem is they don’t have a visible tree, and they didn’t respond to the message you sent two years ago, but that doesn’t mean that you should give up!
This presentation will give users of every skill level more tools to crack that difficult case.
You’ll learn about strategies for logically approaching your search, what you can glean from your match’s profile, how free & paid resources can help you, and you’ll receive a research template that will help you ensure you have left no stone unturned.
