January Youth Take and Make Kits
Available to pick up from HPL’s Youth Services Department beginning January 5
In honor of the “Mew Year,” drop by Hackley Public Library and pick up our cat-themed Take and Make kits! Stay to do our Can You Find our Cats scavenger hunt! Available beginning January 5, and through the month while supplies last. Free.
Preschool Story Time

Intended for ages 0-5, our in-person Story Time is designed to model early literacy skills to parents and caregivers while children enjoy a fun, interactive atmosphere. We’ll read stories, sing songs, and do movement activities! Free.
Purrs and Read with The Whisker Room

We’re partnering with The Whisker Room Café to help kids practice and strengthen their literacy skills by reading out loud to their friendly foster kitties!
They’re excited to hear all the stories, and maybe receive some ear scratches!

Teen Time @ HPL

2ndMonday of each month
We take suggestions! For our teen stakeholders, we will be making a bead maze in January! Talk to Melissa in Youth Services to request ideas for February – April. No reasonable request denied! We want to hang out, craft, and meet new friends! Free.
Paws and Read

We have two four-legged reading helpers in HPL’s Youth Services!! Practice and strengthen literacy skills by reading out loud to our friendly therapy dogs who are calm, non-judgmental listeners. They’re excited to hear all the stories. and receive all the belly rubs! Please call 231-722-8014 to register for a 20-minute time slot. Ages 3-12. Free.
Toddler Sensory Program

Toddler play is fun and messy at Hackley Public Library! Let your toddler explore our themed sensory centers and we’ll worry about the clean-up. Ages 0-4. Free.
Martin Luther King Jr. Story Time

Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with story time at 10:30 and a craft/coloring activity available throughout the day.
Youth Art Class – The Color of Courage
In-Person at Hackley Library
Tuesday, January 20 from 5:30 – 6:30pm
This class offers the opportunity to create collage portraits of important historical figures/influential Black leaders, that celebrate color, creativity, and courage.
Pre-drawn portraits will be created by instructor Jamari Taylor of notable black leaders, and students will use an array of papers to glue together their portraits in different shades.
Capacity is limited for this class, and registration is required. Register at hackleylibrary.org.
The pieces created in this class will be displayed during the month of February, and featured in our All Ages Art Show on February 14. Participants will be able to pick up their pieces in March.
Drop-In Soldering
In-Person at Hackley Library
Saturday, January 24 from 2:00 – 4:00pm
Practice basic soldering skills with our beginner-level kits! The soldering irons will be available first come, first served.
Miss Lydia will be on hand to give demonstrations, tips, or helpful suggestions.
All participants must come with adult supervision. Ages 8-17. Free.

Community Access Line of the Lakeshore 211 (CALL 211) comes to Hackley Library on Thursdays from 1:00-4:00pm, giving you the opportunity to meet and talk with a community resource specialist!
CALL 211 offers help with connecting individuals to SO many resources, including information on food, housing, employment, mental health, and so much more! Speaking to CALL 211’s resource specialist is free. Check HPL’s Facebook page for any cancellations.
Tech Time with Jim

Thursdays from 9:00 – 11:00am
Bring your own device or use one of our patron computers and receive specialized one-on-one assistance from our Tech Assistant, Jim! Come with your tech questions, such as needing help with using a device, downloading our free Library Apps, or something else.
Help will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is an ongoing, DROP-IN program, happening at Hackley Library on Thursdays from 9am – 11am. Free.

This program was designed in part for US military veterans, but it is open for all adults 18+ (both new to D&D and seasoned players). Free.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention

Each Tuesday morning in January at 11:00am
Join us at Hackley Library for a calming program of Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention. This form of Tai Chi is less physically vigorous than traditional Tai Chi, and focuses on smooth, controlled movements that are particularly suitable for older practitioners, or those with mobility issues. Chair Yoga

Join us at Hackley Library for a new take on Book Club! We’ll meet the first Monday of each month. Each month there will be a theme, where you can choose a book based around that theme. At Book Club, you’ll be able to share about the book you read, and discover reads from other attendees! January’s theme is to read a book that became a movie or a tv show. Free.
Creating a legal will with FreeWill

Tuesday, January 13 from 5:30 – 6:30pm
The Community Foundation invites you to learn about FreeWill, a free online platform that helps you create essential planning documents to take care of yourself, your loved ones, and your community. In addition to preparing a legal will, FreeWill offers tools for creating healthcare directives and powers of attorney, so you can decide who will make medical or financial decisions for you if you’re ever unable to.

Mixology Mocktails

Monday, January 26 from 5:30 – 6:30pm
Join mixologist, David Barbour, at Hackley Library to learn about mixology! This will be a fun hands-on program where you’ll learn how to shake, stir, and garnish your way to three alcohol-free mocktails. Registration is required for this adult program. Register at hackleylibrary.org.
Adult Art Class – Shades of Legacy
In-Person at Hackley Library
Tuesday, January 27 from 5:30 – 6:30pm
Led by Jamari Taylor, adults will create a symbolic silhouette painting that honors Black legacy through color, composition, and mood. We’ll discover how silhouettes and color communicate emotion, and explore the concept of self-expression.
We’ll also learn how to utilize blending techniques, paint brush usage, and how to be in control of painting. This casual and fun art class will include pre-drawn cut outs/stencils of historical figures, poets, dancers, activists, and symbolic shapes for participants to use.
