BHM Kick-Off Event

Sweet Soul Food Dessert Contest

In-Person at Hackley Library

Saturday, February 7 from 2:00 – 3:00pm

Create something tasty for HPL’s Sweet Soul Food Contest! Get your recipes out, find your best soul food dessert, and compete in this fun contest. Bring enough for attendees, plus for the two judges, to taste (tastes can be small).

Judges for this competition include LaKisha Harris and Robert Roundtree. Registration is required, regardless of if you are entering a dish or just watching the contest. This contest is open for both adults and youth/teens! At least 10 participants needed for dessert contest.

Open Mic Night at HPL

Monday, February 9 from 5:30 – 7:30pm

Join us for an evening of meaningful sharing! Come to share what you love, whether it be reading poetry, sharing a short story, performing music, acting out theater – or something else! Hosts for this Open Mic are the talented Gemini DaPoet and Kaizen Kabir. Registration is highly preferred, regardless of if you are planning to share or just planning to watch/listen. Free.

Echoes of Harlem: Black Composers and the Great American Songbook

Music & Presentation with Edye and Mike

Tuesday, February 10 from 5:30 – 6:30pm

Come to Hackley Library and enjoy a presentation and music performed by Edye and Mike! This program will showcase the contributions and songs of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, and Eubie Blake. Registration preferred. Free.

All Ages Art Show Celebrating Black History Month

In-Person at Hackley Library

Saturday, February 14 from 2:00 – 3:00pm

Participate in an ALL-AGES art show, either by submitting artwork or coming as a viewer (or both)! This show will feature works inspired by historical figures and influential Black leaders. Artwork in this show can be created by both adults and youths from our own community! All are welcome to submit works of art for this show. During the show, beautiful piano music will be performed by Ondrei Edwards.

Interested in submitting work? You can drop off artwork to Hackley Library between January 26 through February 6.

Parameters for artwork are: 2D: 4×4, 5×7 Accepted media include: Painting | Drawing | Mixed Media | Photography

Explore the James Jackson Museum of African American History

Come to discover an overview of the amazing James Jackson Museum, which is located in Muskegon Heights. During this program at Hackley Library we’ll see artifacts featured from the museum, as well as hear compelling history. Registration preferred.

Researching African American Roots – Muskegon County Genealogical Society Program

Saturday, February 21 at 10:30am

Discover new strategies for tracing African American ancestry with “Researching African American Roots,” a 45-minute Zoom program led by A. Danielle Pritchett, MLS, Genealogy Librarian at the Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room.

Danielle will share key methods, resources, and tips tailored to help you overcome common challenges and make meaningful progress on your family history journey.

Registration is preferred.

Youth & Teen Programs:

February Youth Take and Make Kits Available to pick up from HPL’s Youth Services Department beginning February 2

Unity Quilt Felt Squares (**This craft is for ALL AGES**)

Learn a little about the rich history of textile making in Africa and how those roots manifested in African American quilting traditions in a display in the Youth Services Department. Our quilt square Take and Make is available throughout the month… You are invited to bring it back to the library to become a part of our unity quilt and pick them up after the month is over. You can also join us for our Saturday program and make them at the library!

Kente Cloth Weaving

You can learn a little about the art of Kente weaving (and also grab that kit!). Kente refers to a Ghanaian textile made of hand-woven strips of silk and cotton. Historically the fabric was worn in a toga-like fashion among the Asante, Akan and Ewe people. According to Asante oral tradition, it originated from Bonwire in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

Preschool Story Time

Intended for ages 0-5, our in-person Story Time is designed to model early literacy skills to parents and caregivers while children enjoy a fun, interactive atmosphere. We’ll read stories, sing songs, and do movement activities! Free.

Purrs and Read with The Whisker Room

We’re partnering with The Whisker Room Café to help kids practice and strengthen their literacy skills by reading out loud to their friendly foster kitties! They’re excited to hear all the stories, and maybe receive some ear scratches! Registration is required. Call 231-722-8014 to secure a timeslot. Geared toward youth. Free.

Teen Time @ HPL

We take suggestions! For our teen stakeholders, we will be making a bead maze in January! Talk to Melissa in Youth Services to request ideas for February – April. No reasonable request denied! We want to hang out, craft, and meet new friends! Free.

Paws and Read

We have two four-legged reading helpers in HPL’s Youth Services!! Practice and strengthen literacy skills by reading out loud to our friendly therapy dogs who are calm, non-judgmental listeners. They’re excited to hear all the stories. and receive all the belly rubs! Please call 231-722-8014 to register for a 20-minute timeslot. Ages 3-12. Free.

LEGO Build

Did you know the library has a robust collection of LEGO Kits to build for free and put on display? Explore our catalog of builds at a variety of ability levels. Build alongside other Lego enthusiasts! Ages 5-16. Free.

Unity Quilt Squares – ALL AGES

Saturday, February 21 from 2:00 – 3:30pm

Our quilt square Take and Make is available throughout the month… but wait, what if you could stop in, make your quilt square here and not have to bring it back!? We will bust open the crafting cupboards and have all sorts of supplies available to make your quilt square spectacular! Leave your work of art to add to our Unity Quilt and pick them back up at the end of the month. Free.

Community Access Line of the Lakeshore 211 (CALL 211) comes to Hackley Library on Thursdays from 1:00-4:00pm, giving you the opportunity to meet and talk with a community resource specialist!

CALL 211 offers help with connecting individuals to SO many resources, including information on food, housing, employment, mental health, and so much more! Speaking to CALL 211’s resource specialist is free. Check HPL’s Facebook page for any cancellations.

Tech Time with Jim

Drop-In / In-Person at Hackley Library

Thursdays from 9:00 – 11:00am

Bring your own device or use one of our patron computers and receive specialized one-on-one assistance from our Tech Assistant, Jim! Come with your tech questions, such as needing help with using a device, downloading our free Library Apps, or something else.

Help will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is an ongoing, DROP-IN program, happening at Hackley Library on Thursdays from 9am – 11am. Free. Check HPL’s Facebook page for any cancellations.

Dungeons and Dragons

Each Friday from 12:30 – 4:00pm

Come to Hackley Library for fun D&D sessions! This program was designed in part for US military veterans, but it is open for all adults 18+ (both new to D&D and seasoned players). Free.

Book Club at HPL

Monday, February 2 from 5:30 – 6:30pm

Join us at Hackley Library for a new take on Book Club! We’ll meet the first Monday of each month. Each month there will be a theme, where you can choose a book based around that theme. At Book Club, you’ll be able to share about the book you read, and discover reads from other attendees! February’s theme is to read a book featuring Michigan (such as setting, title, subject). Free.

Chair Yoga
