February Youth Take and Make Kits

Unity Bracelets and Kente Weaving
We are celebrating Black History month with a unity bracelet you can grab and go. If you’d like to stay for a bit, you can learn a little about the art of Kente weaving (and also grab that kit!). Kente refers to a Ghanaian textile made of hand-woven strips of silk and cotton. Historically the fabric was worn in a toga-like fashion among the Asante, Akan and Ewe people. According to Asante oral tradition, it originated from Bonwire in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Free.

Practice and strengthen literacy skills by reading out loud to our friendly therapy dogs. They’re calm, non-judgmental listeners who are excited to hear all the stories — and receive all the belly rubs. Ages 3-12. Free.

These STEAM kits provide hands-on learning experiences that spark imagination and develop problem solving skills. These are self-guided lessons with minimal staff assistance. Ages 6-14. Kits are for students in grades 1-5 and grades 6-8.

MI Little Cooks

Get your recipes out, find your best soul food dessert, and compete for the best in the city.

Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place contestants in the adult category, as well as to the 1st place winner in the children’s/teen’s category.

If you enjoy creative writing, you’ll love Left to Write, HPL’s very own creative writing group! Here you can participate in writing exercises, share your own stories, and meet other creative writers (of all experiences, new or seasoned!).
This group provides a low-key atmosphere for writers of all experiences, and everyone is welcome! Remember to bring paper and your favorite pen.

Michigan ROOTS: African American Migrations in Michigan

Saturday, February 15 at 1:00pm
Presented by Rozlyn Kelly, this program will discuss the migration of Black Americans to Michigan in the mid-1880s, before the Great Migration from the South, with specific examples from Marquette, Midland, and Detroit. Additionally, Rozlyn will try to include an example from the Muskegon area geographic area.
Rozlyn Kelly is the past President of the Michigan Genealogical Council, current President of the Farmington Hills Society, and a speaker at RootsTech and the National Genealogical Society conference.
