Baker College to graduate 600 in Muskegon June 9

MUSKEGON, Mich. – Baker College will honor 600 graduates at a commencement ceremony Friday, June 9, 7 p.m. at the L.C. Walker Arena and Event Center, 955 Fourth St., Muskegon. The event includes graduates who attended the Muskegon and Fremont campuses and the Culinary Institute of Michigan in Muskegon.
“It is with great honor that we present the 2017 class of Baker College of Muskegon graduates,” said Lee Coggin, J.D., Baker College of Muskegon president. “We’re proud that they chose Baker College to expand their knowledge and attain the skills necessary to pursue their career goals, as so many others have done since the college was founded in 1911.”
Several exceptional graduating students will receive the following recognition:
- Board of Regents Most Outstanding Graduate – Jason Hicks, of Grand Haven, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education.
- Bachelor’s Degree Award – Stephanie Stewart, of Mona Shores, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
- Applied Science Award – Hannah Duehring, of Frankenmuth, graduating with an associate degree in culinary arts.
- Health Sciences Award – Anthony Shelton, of Grand Rapids, graduating with an occupational therapy assistant associate degree.
- Zen Hanger Business Administration Award – Megan Dickson, of Zeeland, graduating with an associate degree in human resource management.
- Education and Human Services Award – Marissa Martinez, of Branch, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in human services.
The ceremony will include memorials to two leaders of Baker College of Muskegon who passed away in 2016 – Sue Stout and Gary Ostrom. Stout served the college for 25 years as an instructor and director of the science department. She was beloved by students and staff. Ostrom, former editor of the Muskegon Chronicle, was a member of the college’s board of regents for 26 years and provided invaluable leadership during the building of the Culinary Institute of Michigan. They will both be missed.
Two graduates of the interpreter training program will provide services during the ceremony for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. The students are Kat Lidstone, of Grand Rapids, and Nichole Gawron, of North Muskegon.
A detachment from the Michigan Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion will present the colors.
Students graduating from Baker College’s Culinary Institute of Michigan at Muskegon were also honored at a medallion ceremony in advance of the June 9 commencement.
