MUSKEGON, Mich. – Baker College has again been recognized by two media organizations for its ongoing dedication to make quality higher education available to U.S. military personnel, veterans and families.

The 2017 recognitions are:

  • Military Friendly Gold Award in the category for private institutions with more than 10,000 students from Victory Media for outstanding programs and positive education outcomes for veterans and their families.
  • Top 20 Best for Vets in the career and technical college category from Military TimesÒ in recognition of a commitment to provide educational opportunities to veterans, service members and military families.

“Welcoming, supporting and positively influencing the lives of our nation’s heroes are extremely important to Baker College,” said Airman 1st Class Christy Cooper, Baker College military education officer. “A benefit of these awards is that they draw attention to the continued need to enhance paths for military members to succeed in civilian life.”

Cooper said that in addition to having a veteran point of contact at each Baker College campus, all admissions advisors and financial services team members are trained to help military-connected students with educational benefits and can provide reference and contact information for outside agencies and resources.

Baker College grants academic credits for military training, as recommended by the American Council on Education, and participates in the federal military tuition assistance program. It also supports the presidential executive order for educational institutions serving military-connected students by actively participating in GoArmyEd, a virtual education management tool for students, and the U.S. Air Force Air University Associate-to-Baccalaureate Cooperative.

Baker College has been designated a Military Friendly School by Victory Media every year since the list was first published in 2010. Selection for 2017 was based on data from three sources: federal agencies, veteran students and proprietary Military Friendly surveys from participating colleges. Results included assessment of the school’s student veteran retention, graduation rates, job placement, and loan repayment, persistence and default. Ernst & Young audited the methodology and weightings.

Victory Media, is a service-disabled, veteran-owned business that serves veterans and their families through its G.I. Jobs®, Military Spouse, Vetrepreneur®, STEM JobsSM and Military Friendly® brands. Information is at www.militaryfriendly.com.

Military Times has named Baker College Best for Vets numerous times. This year, the schools were evaluated for their culture, student support, academic outcomes/quality, academic policies, cost and financial aid. Categories were individually weighted with university culture and student support having the greatest value. Other factors considered included key metrics from several federal agencies.

Military Times, a division of Sightline Media Group, covers news for service members and their families. Information is at www.militarytimes.com.
