MUSKEGON, Mich. — September 8, 2026 — More than a century ago, Lawrence and Violet Collins brought music to Muskegon. Today, their love of music continues to enrich the community through a remarkable legacy gift that brings high-quality musical entertainment to the public — free of charge.

On Thursday, October 29, 2026, the Lawrence & Violet Collins Music Fund will present New Orleans funk powerhouse DUMPSTAPHUNK at the Frauenthal Center. Tickets are free, continuing a tradition established by the Collinses more than 100 years ago.

From a Muskegon Music Store to a Lasting Legacy

Lawrence and Violet Collins adopted Muskegon as their home nearly 110 years ago. In 1917, they opened Collins Music House at the corner of Third Street and Western Avenue, next to what is now the Frauenthal Center. Through their business, the Collinses helped fill hundreds of Muskegon-area homes with music by selling pianos to generations of local families.

Lawrence Collins died in 1955, followed by Violet in 1968. Through a gift in their wills, the Collinses established a music foundation bearing their names. In 1999, the foundation was transferred to the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, where the legacy continues through the Lawrence & Violet Collins Music Fund.

The Collinses’ wishes were clear: the fund is to provide annual, high-quality musical programs for the education and enjoyment of the general public — for free.

For more than a century, their passion for music has helped make Muskegon a livelier and more connected community. The upcoming DUMPSTAPHUNK performance is the latest chapter in that enduring legacy.

DUMPSTAPHUNK Brings New Orleans Funk to Muskegon

Formed spontaneously during Jazz Fest in 2003, DUMPSTAPHUNK has spent nearly two decades establishing itself as a cornerstone of the New Orleans music scene. Rooted in the musical legacy of the Neville family and The Meters, the band has helped carry the city’s distinctive funk tradition into a new generation.

Known for electrifying live performances, DUMPSTAPHUNK has shared the stage with legendary artists including Carlos Santana, Bob Weir, George Clinton, and Dave Matthews, as well as members of Phish. The band has also reached major career milestones, including opening for the Rolling Stones in New Orleans and touring with Dave Matthews Band.

Blending deep, gritty grooves with elements of rock and jazz, DUMPSTAPHUNK delivers masterful musicianship, soulful melodies, and the unmistakable spirit of New Orleans.
