December Youth Take and Make Kits
Available to pick up from HPL’s Youth Services Department beginning December 1
Music and Light! Bring a little extra light into your home with a holiday-themed luminary from Hackley Library. Additionally, have a little fun putting together a holiday themed jingle stick to add to your holiday festivities. Available through the month while supplies last. Free.
Preschool Story Time

Join us at Hackley Library for stories, songs, and movement activities on select Fridays* in November! Intended for ages 0-5, our in-person story time is designed to teach early literacy skills to parents and caregivers while children enjoy a fun, interactive atmosphere. Free.
*Special “Letters to Santa” Story Time will be on December 12.

“Letters to Santa” Story Time

Friday, December 12 at 10:30am
On Friday, December 12, we’re having a special “Letters to Santa” themed Story Time at HPL! We will be reading wintery reads and writing letters to Santa, which you can mail to Santa in the special mailbox in Hackley Park! Free.
Teen Time – Harry Potter LEGO Build

Do you love LEGOs? How about Harry Potter? Have you ever built a 6,000 piece LEGO set? Join us as we build the 10th largest LEGO set: Hogwarts Castle 71043!! Build with us throughout the Fall and into Winter! Free.
Yummy Winter Cookie Decorating

Saturday, December 20 from 2:00 – 3:00pm
During this youth event, we’re partnering with Kellie from the Perfect Mix Baking Co. to decorate cookies! Kellie will be joining us at Hackley Library to hand out cookie kits to children on a first-come, first-served basis. Free.

Thursdays from 1:00 – 4:00pm
Community Access Line of the Lakeshore 211 (CALL 211) comes to Hackley Library on Thursdays from 1:00-4:00pm, giving you the opportunity to meet and talk with a community resource specialist!
CALL 211 offers help with connecting individuals to SO many resources, including information on food, housing, employment, mental health, and so much more! Speaking to CALL 211’s resource specialist is free.

Tech Time with Jim
Drop-In / In-Person at Hackley Library
Thursdays from 9:00 – 11:00am
Bring your own device or use one of our patron computers and receive specialized one-on-one assistance from our Tech Assistant, Jim! Come with your tech questions, such as needing help with using a device, downloading our free Library Apps, or something else.
Help will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is an ongoing, DROP-IN program, happening at Hackley Library on Thursdays from 9am – 11am. Free.

Come to Hackley Library for fun D&D sessions!
This program was designed in part for US military veterans, but it is open for all adults 18+ (both new to D&D and seasoned players). Free.
Book Club at HPL
In-Person at Hackley Library
Monday, December 1 from 5:30 – 6:30pm
Join us at Hackley Library for a new take on Book Club! We’ll meet the first Monday of each month. Each month there will be a theme, where you can choose a book based around that theme. At Book Club, you’ll be able to share about the book you read, and discover reads from other attendees! December’s theme is to read a “beach” read. Free.
Open Mic Night at HPL

Tuesday, December 2 from 5:30 – 7:30pm
Join us for an evening of meaningful sharing during Open Mic Night at HPL.
Hosts for this Open Mic are the talented Gemini DaPoet and Kaizen Kabir.
Come to share what you love, whether it be reading poetry, sharing a short story, performing music, acting out theater, or something else!

Left to Write – Creative Writing Group

2nd Wednesday of each month
If you enjoy creative writing for fun, you’ll love Left to Write, HPL’s very own creative writing group! Here you can participate in writing exercises, share your own stories, and meet other creative writers (of all experiences, new or seasoned!). This group provides a low-key atmosphere for writers of all experiences, and everyone is welcome! Remember to bring paper and your favorite pen.
Left to Write will meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 3:30 – 4:30pm. Free.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention
In-Person at Hackley Library
Each Tuesday morning at 11:00am
Join us at Hackley Library for a calming program of Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention. This form of Tai Chi is less physically vigorous than traditional Tai Chi, and focuses on smooth, controlled movements that are particularly suitable for older practitioners, or those with mobility issues. Class Highlights:

- Accessibility: This class is easier on the knees and joints. You can successfully participate while sitting in a chair—no getting down on the floor!
- Structure: We begin with a gentle warm-up (seated first, then standing if comfortable), followed by 40-45 minutes of step-by-step form instruction, and a brief cool-down.
It is recommended to wear shoes during this program.

Grounding Moments – Mind of Matter series

Tuesday, December 16 from 5:30 – 6:30pm
Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just mentally stretched thin? You’re not alone, and you don’t have to navigate it without support. Prioritizing our mental health is a vital part of self-care, especially when anxiety and other challenges show up in our daily lives.
Join Hackley Public Library to explore simple, intentional, and effective tools to help calm the nervous system, reduce tension, and manage anxious thoughts.
We’ll wrap up by creating personalized grounding kits provided by the library, filled with tangible items to take home and use whenever you need a moment to reset.
