Youth & Teen Programs:
Preschool Story Time on August 1
In-Person at Hackley Library
Friday, August 1 at 10:30am
Intended for ages 0-5, this in-person Story Time is designed to teach early literacy skills to parents and caregivers, while children enjoy a fun, interactive atmosphere. We’ll read stories, sing songs, and do movement activities! Free.
*Please Note: August 1 is the only Story Time date for Hackley Library in August.
August Youth Take and Make Kits
Pick up from Hackley Library
Available beginning Monday, August 4
Welcome to the dog days of summer! Dog paw imprints and other dog adventures await you at Hackley Library in August! Air-dry clay imprint craft kits will be available to pick up from the youth services department. Available through the month while supplies last.
Paws and Read with Breezy and Dolly
In-Person at Hackley Library
Mondays, August 4 & 18 at 4:00pm
Practice and strengthen literacy skills by reading out loud to our friendly therapy dogs. They’re calm, non-judgmental listeners who are excited to hear all the stories, and receive all the belly rubs. Ages 3-12. Free.
Registration required – call 231-722-8014 to sign up for a 20-minute time slot.
LEGO Build
In-Person at Hackley Library
Wednesday, August 6 from 3:00 – 4:30pm
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! NO, it’s a LEGO BUILD.
Bring your imagination and go wild with our Legos.
Free form Legos are always available, but a limited amount of guided Lego builds will also be on hand for creating!
Guided builds are first come, first served.
This is a ‘drop-in’ program, and is great fun for kids, teens, and families to enjoy! Free.
National Lighthouse Day Story Time
In-Person at Muskegon South Pierhead Lighthouse

Thursday, August 7 at 3:00pm
Join us for a special Lighthouse Storytime on Thursday, August 7 at 3 pm to celebrate National Lighthouse Day!
We’ll catch sun and fresh air out at the Muskegon South Pierhead Lighthouse, as well as read stories, sing songs, and watch the boats out on the lake. Free.
Soft mats are provided for seating.
Teen Time – LEGO Competition
In-Person at Hackley Library
Tuesday, August 12 at 3:00pm
Calling all teens!
Participate in a LEGO competition and see if you can build your kit the fastest!
All teams will have the same kit to build. This competition is a drop-in program.
Gather a team to build with, or come by yourself to be added to a team.
Geared toward ages 13 – 17. Free.
Summer Crafternoon

Wednesday, August 13 from 3:00 – 4:30pm
Come to Hackley Library for some crafting fun! We will be offering a number of craft kits from throughout the year along with materials to create your very own special piece of art! Youth/Teen. Free.

Book Club at HPL

Join us at Hackley Library for a new take on Book Club!
We’ll meet on the first Monday of each month. Each month there will be a theme, where you can choose a book based around that theme. At Book Club, you’ll be able to share about the book you read, and discover reads from other attendees! This month’s theme is to read a book with the name of a USA state in the title. Stage Left Muskegon – Adult Acting Class

Saturdays, August 9 & 30 at 10:00am
Join us for a playful, & low-key acting class for adults! Led by Jack Kaczmarczyk.
– Basics of Acting
– Introductory scene work & monologues
– Gentle warm-ups, community centered learning
– Theater Games
– No experience necessary!

Left to Write – Creative Writing Group

Meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month
If you enjoy creative writing, you’ll love Left to Write, HPL’s very own creative writing group! Here you can participate in writing exercises, share your own stories, and meet other creative writers (of all experiences, new or seasoned!).
This group provides a low-key atmosphere for writers of all experiences, and everyone is welcome! Remember to bring paper and your favorite pen.
Left to Write will meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 3:30 – 4:30pm. Free.
ALL AGES – Hackley Humans – Human Library Event

Meet and speak with various members from our own community!
During this event, human “books” and “reader” attendees can share conversations and open dialogue in a casual and comfortable environment.

Open Mic Night

Monday, August 25 from 5:30 – 7:30pm
Join us for an evening of meaningful sharing during Open Mic Night at HPL!
Hosts for this Open Mic are the talented Gemini DaPoet and Kaizen Kabir.
Come to share what you love, whether it be reading poetry, sharing a short story, singing or playing an instrument, performing theater – or something else!
If you’re not interested in sharing, come just to listen! Please register either way.

Senior Social Hour – Rock Painting
In-Person at Hackley Library
Thursday, August 28 at 3:00pm
Join us for an hour of rock painting during Senior Social Hour in August!
There will be a selection of rocks to choose from.
This will be a self-led program, where attendees can decorate and paint their rocks however they’d like. There will be some examples on hand as well.
Light refreshments will also be available.
This program is in partnership with Harbor Terrace Senior Living.
