Youth & Teen Programs:

April Youth Take and Make Kits

April is poetry month, so make a journal to fill with words you’ve written or something from your favorite poet. Plus! Pay homage to spring, pollinators, and all things plants with our fun cheerio sunflower.  Youth all ages.

Available beginning Tuesday, April 1, and through the month while supplies last.  Free.

Preschool Story Time

In-Person at Hackley Library
Select Fridays (April 4 & April 25) at 10:30am

Intended for ages 0-5, our in-person Story Time is designed to teach early literacy skills to parents and caregivers, while children enjoy a fun, interactive atmosphere.  We’ll read stories, sing songs, and do movement activities!  Please check HPL’s Facebook page for any cancellations.  Free.

Crafty Spring Break at HPL

April 7 through April 11
10:00am – 2:00pm
Celebrate a week off from school at the library! We will have a new craft each day. Come for one craft or all five!  Youth all ages, free. Available daily while supplies last.

We designate this hour every month for crafting, projects, and more for our patrons ages 13-18 in our Teen Room on the first floor of HPL.  Please check our Facebook page for the monthly theme!  Free.

Paws and Read with Breezy and Dolly

Select Mondays from 4:00 – 5:00pm

Mondays, April 14 & 28

Practice and strengthen literacy skills by reading out loud to our friendly therapy dogs. They’re calm, non-judgmental listeners who are excited to hear all the stories — and receive all the belly rubs. Ages 3-12. Free.

LEGO Education – Select Wednesdays

Wednesday, April 16 from 4:00 – 4:45pm
Third Wednesday of each Month

These STEAM kits provide hands-on learning experiences that spark imagination and develop problem solving skills. These are self-guided lessons with minimal staff assistance.  Ages 6-14.  Kits are for students in grades 1-5 and grades 6-8.
They are available first come, first served.  Free.

HPL and Kaleidoscope Farm are partnering for a special program to celebrate Earth Day! Come and learn all about seeds and gardening, and then make a soda bottle trench planter to take home and care for.
Families and teens. FreePlease bring a clean 2-liter bottle for your planter. We will have a limited number available.

Celebrating Pollinators

Saturday, April 26 at 2:00pm

Let’s celebrate Earth Day by supporting our pollinators!  Learn about pollinators and how important they are to our planet, do a craft, learn about the pollination process with a hands-on approach, and build the LEGO WeDo bee pollinator!  Free.  Ages 3-15.

Eat Safe Fish Presentation

Are you familiar with PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and eating safe fish?

Staff from DHHS will be on hand to share insight and information on knowing what to look for in terms of eating fish that is safe and healthy.

This unique opportunity is beneficial, given how close our communities are to Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan.

Join us at Hackley Library for a new take on Book Club!

Each month there will be a theme, where you can choose a book based around that theme.  At Book Club, you’ll be able to share about the book you read, and discover reads from other attendees!  This month’s theme is to read a book with an orange or yellow book cover.  Registration is preferred – click HERE to register.  Free.

Left to Write – Creative Writing Group

Meets the second Wednesday of each month

If you enjoy creative writing, you’ll love Left to Write, HPL’s very own creative writing group!  Here you can participate in writing exercises, share your own stories, and meet other creative writers (of all experiences, new or seasoned!).  This group provides a low-key atmosphere for writers of all experiences, and everyone is welcome!  Remember to bring paper and your favorite pen.  Left to Write will meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 3:30 – 4:30pm.  Free.

Gardening 101: Cultivate YOUR Green Thumb

Discover the joy of gardening in this informative beginner class!

Saturday, April 19 at 10:30am

Presenter: Scott Norwick

Painting the picture of Michigan based on 1950 census results – this presentation covers background on the 1950 census including birth locations, parent birth locations, income levels, educations levels, military service, unemployment levels and job industry information.

Comparisons will be discussed on urban to rural areas, Michigan’s various regions and Michigan to other Midwest states.

Scott will also address foreign immigration clusters highlighted through birth and parent birth locations.

Focus on the migration to Michigan from other states (including the Great Migration from southern states), concentration on employment industries and interesting and unusual job titles will be summarized.
